You are invited to Midwinter Tales from the Archives, a social event hosted by the AMA Special Initiatives Committee.

This event was inspired by “Stories from the Archives”, a popular event hosted by the AMA in the past. This year, we are reimagining it as Midwinter Tales from the Archives. There will be a buffet, coffee, tea, wine, and non-alcoholic punch. This is a wonderful opportunity for a midwinter break. Please join us to engage with colleagues, meet new friends, and share stories and memories in an historical setting. We will be gathering on February 6th (5-8pm) at Dalnavert Museum (Hugh John MacDonald House and Annex) located at 61 Carlton Street off Broadway.

We invite members to look through archives in Manitoba to see what interesting photographs they can find that document how Manitobans have celebrated and embraced the winter season. Think community club events, outdoor activities for families or children, pancake breakfasts, winter socials, bonfires, bonspiels, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, ice fishing and hockey tournaments, festivals (e.g., The Trapper's Festival, Festival du voyageur), and more!

Please submit one digital or digitized photo of a midwinter scene or event, along with a title and the collection / fonds name. You will be asked to speak for a few minutes about the image and why you selected the image. Does the photo remind you of your childhood? Or a winter event or tradition that has faded into the past? Does it illustrate an aspect of your institution’s history? Does it document a community winter event in your neighborhood? What does it tell us about how Manitobans embraced and celebrated winter in the past?

Images should be submitted to Sarah Story (Advisor & Office Assistant) by February 5th (ama1@mts.net). Scanned images should be a minimum 300 DPI and saved to JPEG format. The images will be included in a slideshow at the event.

Tours of the historic house will be offered upon request. If you are interested in a tour, RSVP to Sarah Story (ama1@mts.net).

For all other inquiries about the midwinter event, please reach out to Brian (brian.hubner@umanitoba.ca) or Chris (martinc.kotecki@gmail.com).
